Hypermilers get 100+ Mpg

The other week my sister read to me an article in Readers Digest about this Hypermiler that can consistently get over 100mpg in his hybrid car. The person narrating the story said that as he rode in the car, he was sweating because it was so hot. The driver keeps the windows rolled up to preserve fuel economy due to wind resistance. He would screech around corners without braking to keep his momentum up. Any braking loses that inertia that you paid so dearly to build up.

So with gas in my area approaching $4/gal I started to do some research about these driving methods. I found a couple sites below that have some basic as well as advanced techniques for getting insane gas mileage. Keep in mind these guys are serious and are using hybrids. You can still use these methods in non-hybrids as well.

Basic techniques:
  • Don't accelerate quickly or brake too fast
  • Follow the speed limits; Driving fast decreases fuel economy
  • Don't use 4wd
  • Keep your tires inflated properly
  • Don't carry extra weight (I removed my stereo equipment and sub-woofers)
Advanced techniques:
  • Use a lighter weight engine oil to decrease resistance (within your car's requirements)
  • Stay in other auto's wind drafts
  • Driving w/ buffers (allows you to maintain speed without losing energy by braking)
  • Smart braking
Keep in mind you should use caution with these techniques, especially wind drafts.
