Despite what many think of his songs, his persona and ego seems to be given to causing a ruckus and waves of contempt in everything that he does.
First of all, if you happen to play at a show before him, you are not allowed to use the Ableton Live software to play music. Read what happened to maximum01. Why would it matter if you happen to use the same audio looping software as him? Is he afraid of being showed up by someone better than him?
Next is the whole fiasco with Fruity Loops. Apparently, there are some royalty free loops and samples from his song Faxing Berlin in the Fruity Loops studio software. He made such a big stink about it and claimed that Fruity Loops stole his music. The company has now pulled all samples and melodic content from their software. Why would such a guy care about anything like that? If he never intended to get into creating electronic dance music in the first place, it should not be that big of a deal to him. He apparently seems to care only about making money and building up his own ego.
I don't even want to discuss the many articles and discussion boards that are talking about his comments and thoughts about dj's. Read them for yourself. Just use the terms 'hate', 'dj' and his name in the search phrase.
If he truly cared about the music, the people and the vibe that he creates, he would embrace the open, united, and collective culture that is everyone in the music scene today. He is just riding the wave for his own selfish benefit. Yes he can make a track or two, but I will never go to see him hit the play button on Ableton, pay for one of his tracks, or buy a cd of only his own songs.

Hai, this is so true ... I thought this guy was cool you know ... until I read the artists comments about FlStudio, A piece of well known pwnage software that is 1,000,000,000x better than him or his music.
I dont understand how someone who has is living the dream I so want, has all this money (Im Not In It For The Money) and a pathetic Ego could be such a miserable ??? .COCK. ??? ... And I hope he reads this ... He needs to know that we hate him :)

Aight I've been a die hard Mau fan ever since i saw him at the '09 Ultra Fest. in Miami. And you all wanna know why ppl fall in love with him? It aint cuz of his, personality, sense of humor or any of this bullshit crap you all've been talkin bout.

And also i met him after his For Lack Of Better Name concert back here at the denver ogden with some friends outside a 7/11. And he was chill, didn't talk long of course but my friend gave him his hat to keep and he seemed to appreciate it. wasn't rude or nothin. i think you got him all wrong.

He's just an extremely intelligent guy pissed @ all the f***ing retards on the music scene. And he has every right to be. Because unlike 99% of them, he actually makes his own music, makes his live act LIVE (or, at least, as live as is possible for such music). How do I know this? Because I'm also a producer and released some track on the same VA's as Joel (and no, I will not tell you who I am, as that's not part of this discussion). I know how many fakers there are out there and how clueless the crowds often are. So for the few of us who actually know what we're doing out there, it can get quite frustrating.
I'm not saying he's always a nice guy. I'm just saying he's right for being pissed.
He gets a bar rap. All the time. I've breifly met him and he appeared to be a good guy. Big fan of his music. He has good range, and yet people give him shit for sounding the same? His house and hard electro are elite compared to a lot of stuff being put out these days. He's not pulling a Metallica here, he just didn't want his music being published without even asking him.

you say hate and stuff, dude, with any idea there's bound to be people that love it and people that hate it, people need to chill out about Joel himself and simply appreciate the music, to be honest with you, i respect the guy for using a mask for example in his performances because I'm simply sick of today's singers getting by on their looks, girl artists these days get half naked sing with a crappy chicken voice (Katy Perry) and call them selves artists. I also respect that most of his live concerts are actually live...he makes most of it on the spot, and also i really appreciate the fact that he is trying to turn club music into a forward direction, instead of using turn tables he writes his own software and uses a computer....so before you post smack lets see you make something that wont make my ears bleed. As for his personality....hm he's an artist, so why don't you write a review on his music instead of his personality, I would understand if he was something else where personality mattered but he's an artist...no he's Deadmau5 and he's got amazing talent, that's what I think
